Proof of concept of a self-tightening needle-less suture using a NiTi shape memory alloy

Abstract Among surgical procedures, suturing is considered simple. However, in some situations, not easy or feasible. Here, we present proof of concept a new self-tightening needle-less suture made NiTi alloy. The device designed to overcome two demanding steps traditional suturing: needle introduction and manual knotting. Our novel composed only short wire that able change shape by exploiting thermoelastic phase transition. This achieved increasing the temperature from operating room (e.g., 20–22 °C) 32 °C using warm water. Suturing consists steps: introduction, which an open configuration, recovery (i.e., closed configuration). configuration maintained at human body thanks peculiar pseudoelastic properties material. Finally, thermal functional characterization verified simplicity effectiveness proposed device. Graphic abstract
